E-bikes on the rise – How can we prevent accidents?

The market for electric bicycles is booming. Various market analysts have different estimations of growth, but one thing they all say: The sales of electric bikes are expected to take a large rise in the coming years.

The downside to that is that electric bicycles seem to cause more severe accidents than ordinary bicycles. This is shown in different reports globally. The reason is not – as one might expect – that e-bikes are faster and consequently crash harder.

Rather, the cause of the accidents is difficulties balancing and controlling the bike when the motor kicks in. Especially unexpected accelerations while turning corners cause dangerous situations and accidents. Furthermore, e-bikes are more likely to wobble due to sometimes less stable frames and an unsuitable location of the battery.

In Denmark 9 out of 10 people own a regular bicycle and many ride their bike every day. In Denmark, like the rest of the world, e-bikes are on a rise, and it is not surprising that a Danish engineering company, Sensitivus Gauge, has set out to solve some of the issues concerning e-bike safety.

By developing and incorporating better and more precise sensor systems, including torque and angular sensors, unwanted surprises can be eliminated. This will make riding an e-bike a much more smooth and more natural experience, and most important of all, a much safer ride.

The Danish Road Traffic Authority is already looking into solutions like this, and it is indicated that sensor systems might become mandatory in the EU in the future.

“We would like to see all electric bicycles equipped with sensors that increase the safety of the cyclist. Fortunately, there are more and more manufacturers of motors for electric bicycles who understand why it is so important to integrate a torque sensor that is both fast and accurate. Our goal is for it to become a standard parameter on all e-bikes,” says CEO Rolf Ostergaard from the Sensitivus Gauge.
